This unique Victorian Christmas card features an illustration of a small angel, at water’s edge, watching over a long-haired girl, who is playing in the water. The angel has a good grasp of the stem of a beautiful iris that is in full bloom and he has one knee on a hollowed-out log, as he watches over the girl. The girl is close to shore and there is a large pink sea shell behind her. She is wearing a white dress, a water lily on her head and a long pearl necklace. It appears that her necklace has come apart at one end and the pearls are falling off, into the water.
The message on the front of the card is:
A Christmas Wish
Angels this Holy Time,
watch o’er thee keeping
Bring Peace and Happiness
home to thy breast.
The back of the Victorian Christmas card includes a verse, in a reddish-brown text on an aged white background.
The verse is outlined with a delicate ornate frame. It reads:
A Christmas Wish
Bright be thy days and as calm be thy sleeping
As Stars in the bosom of Ocean at rest
Angels this Holy time, watch o’er thee keeping
Bring Peace and Happiness home
to thy breast –
By no wave of sadness, nor breath of discomfort,
May thy Happy Years evermore be distressed.
