Here are two pages from the vintage storybook Marigold Garden by Kate Greenaway, circa 1892. The pages include a poem titled Happy Days and an illustration of two young ladies (perhaps older sisters) who have stopped to visit as they cross paths on their walk. The older girls are each holding a baby and have more children standing at their sides. There is also a border of yellow flowers at the bottom of the first page.
Here is a cleaner version of the group from the first page.

The poem indicates that the ‘mothers’ are maybe the older sisters of the little ones. What do you think?

Thank you Shari! I believe you are right and I’ve changed my description accordingly.
