In this old sepia-toned farm scene, a pig and her piglets are cozy in the hay. A rooster and hen are perched on the roof of what is likely either a pig pen or chicken coop. The rooster thinks the pigs are sleeping too long and being lazy so he is crowing to try to wake them. This image is from the children’s book Visit to the Farm by Koerner & Hayes, 1896.

What a sweet and tranquil scene! That’s one of the many things I love about the illustrations from this book–their peaceful quality. Kids today are bombarded from all directions with bold, bright, busy images–in print and on television–and I think that trend is very sad. I’m super-busy right now as we prepare for our Big Move next month, so after Christmas I’d like to make a picture book using the illustrations from this book for my granddaughters, ages 4 and 2. (If there’s time, maybe I could make it as one of their Christmas gifts!) I’d sit down with them and have them tell me what the animals on each page are doing, thinking, etc., and share my own thoughts. I’ll let you know how they respond to it!
