I’ve happily been working away on building a catalogue of custom invitations (for a second Etsy shop that I plan to open) but I’ve run into a roadblock. Fonts. I purchased some wonderful fonts from fonts.com to use in my designs. I read the terms first and understood that it would be okay to use any fonts I purchased for my invitations; however, the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if that was indeed the case. I reread the terms and had my doubts so I contacted the company.
I’ve received an initial reply that indicates I may require a webserver license. The person writing asked where I am located, if this is for a company, and said he will put me in touch with the corresponding sales rep. I responded with the required information and am now waiting to hear back from the sales rep. I’m dying to know if I’m going to need a webserver license and if I do, how expensive it is going to be. If it’s prohibitive, I’m not going to bother and if that’s the case, I’ve wasted money on the fonts I’ve already purchased. I don’t like to think negatively though so I’m going to think that it’ll all work out.
This also leaves me wondering where small, home-based business owners who create invitations and greeting cards find fonts to use in their designs. Do they spend hundreds of dollars buying fonts and corresponding licenses?
I hope you get to use the fonts you’ve paid for, what about Microsoft fonts? Can you use them or do you also require special permission? People have to get fonts from someplace. You’re such a good designer, couldn’t you design fonts?
Thank you for your confidence Darlene but I don’t have a clue how to design fonts and don’t really have a desire (or the time) to learn. I am doing some research on fonts now and I’ve found a few that are in the public domain. I’m hoping to find more and also hoping to hear back from the fonts.com sales rep this week.

I hope you settled the fonts’ matter by now, but perhaps it will help you to know that dafonts.com has a lot of lovely fonts you are allowed to use for free on commercial purposes.
