Here is a vintage clip art illustration of a ball of yarn with two knitting needles inserted through it. The yarn is sitting on a small piece of knitting. The image is from an ad in a booklet titled Smocking and Fancy Stitches for the Decoration of Garments that was published by The Butterick Publishing Co. in May 1892.
