These vintage cookbook pages include an illustration and recipe for Coconut Layer Cake. Both pages are from the “Butter cakes” section of the booklet. The first page below includes an illustration of three large slices of bright yellow coconut cake with fluffy white icing, to which appears coconut has been added. The cake pieces are set out on teal colored serving dishes, on a table covered with a teal colored tablecloth. Forks are set out on the table as well.
Also included on the first page is an article titled “Hints on Mixing Butter Cake”. The article covers tips such as: how to cream the shortening, when to add the sugar, flour, baking powder, and milk to the mixture. It also gives suggestions on when to add the eggs to the mixture, with detailed instructions on when to beat egg whites, yolks, or whole eggs, and how to add them to the cake mixture.
The second page includes recipes for Maple Nut Cake, Banana Nut Cake, and the recipe for Coconut Layer Cake.
The recipe for Maple Nut Cake requires one egg. The recipe for Banana Nut Cake requires two eggs, and the recipe for Coconut Layer Cake requires three eggs.
The pages are from a small booklet titled Cake Secrets, by Igleheart Brothers Inc. The booklet was published in 1928 (copyright was not renewed).

How do you find out if a copyright has not been renewed? We have lots of old books like this at the small museum where I volunteer, but don’t know how to find out if the copyright has expired and we are free to share things from the books.
Julie J
Hi Jean,
Copyright cannot be quickly explained; however, as a basic rule, books that have been published in the United States before 1928 (as of January 1, 2023) are in the public domain. There are times when copyright has expired and/or was never applied for.
Here are a few links to resources that may help you discover more about copyright and the public domain:
