Antique Lace Pattern

While searching through my vintage ephemera, and old books, for items to include in my new collaged paper pack, I came across this illustration of an antique lace pattern. I think it’s especially beautiful, so I wanted to share it with you.

The description that accompanies the illustration in the old book I scanned the image from reads, “M. Vanderkelen-Bresson, of Brussels, a lace-manufacturer—who has, by his untiring ability, greatly aided the celebrity of the Belgian capital in this branch of the textile Arts—has contributed an exquisite specimen of patient industry in a LACE VEIL, the border of which we here engrave. It possesses novelty in its design, as well as in its fabrication. We do not engrave the fond, or groundwork of the lace, except in some portions of the scroll, which will better enable our readers to judge of the taste and elegance of the design. It is meritorious and more than usually suggestive.”

Here is a black and white clip art version of the antique lace pattern.

I scanned the original illustration from The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue, published for the proprietors, by George Virtue in London, 1851.

  1. These are incredible. You can gaze and gaze at them, and always see a detail you hadn’t noticed. This work must have taken a toll on the artists’ eyes. Are there any records of early sight loss in the people who worked in this industry?
