Here is an illustrated vintage poem of pigeons eating seeds from the ground. The poem tells how the birds come when called and eat breakfast at the feet of those calling, “For kindness makes them tame and sweet”.

I scanned the original image from the children’s book Visit to the Farm by Koerner & Hayes, 1896.
