When I posted the Second Cotillon Victorian dance invitation a couple days ago, I was asked by a blog reader how that type of invitation worked. When I went in search of the answer, I found the entire article the invitation was part of to be very interesting. In many respects, the world was a much different place 122 years ago!
I thought you may enjoy the article, titled Social Code, as well, and have decided to post it here, in its entirety, for you. I think the pages would be fun to use in vintage designs and junk journals.

I scanned the original pages from the January 1896 issue of The Delineator magazine.

Thank you ever so much for this! I’ll get to reading it this evening. Love that era….but can’t imagine living then myself!
Thanks again,
Pat

Thank you for this! It is truly fascinating and an excellent read, whether or not one uses it as a printable.
Sherri
Gorgeous! You have really been adding a wealth of images to the blog lately and I LOVE it all! Thank you so much Julie for taking the time to list all the goodies for us. Happy New Year!
Linda
Fascinating what a great read! Really enjoyed reading about their dancing etiquette, that men shall never leave a bell standing on the dance floor alone and bells will only dance with one gentleman per song. Genuine respect and courtesy, think it is wonderful and that should never go out of style.

I read every word and was delighted to have imagined myself at one of the balls! My single son, nearing 60, dances at many local dances for fun. There are afternoon and evening dances where one dances with everyone in attendance. I’m sure the formality isn’t the same but I will print these pages and send to him to see that he was born quite a few years too late!
Thank you for all your amazing contributions!
Leslie
Very interesting. Thank you for posting these and for your generosity.

It’s wonderful to know that you all enjoyed the article! Thank you kindly for the feedback.
Jo, I agree. I don’t personally have plans to use it as a printable but I did find it fascinating to read.
Sherri, Happy New Year to you as well. I’m glad you’re enjoying the vintage goodies.
Linda, you’re absolutely right that genuine respect and courtesy should never go out of style.
Pat, I’m happy to know you enjoyed the article and I hope your son does as well. I think it’s great that he enjoys dancing! One of the lawyers I used to work with did ballroom dancing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Until then, I didn’t realize ballroom dancing was still around.
My 22-year old granddaughter dances as well, although her forte is the swing dance, She was married in August 2016 and her new hubby swing dances as well. Their wedding dance music was mainly the old swing dance music and I absolutely loved it!
Leslie, you’re welcome. There are many more interesting images that I have in mind to scan/clean digitally and add to my blog in the near future. Enjoy!
