Here is a vintage clip art illustration of an old fashioned pickle jar. There is a label on the jar marked Piccalilly and the top of the jar is covered with a piece of fabric that is elasticized at the neck of the jar.

Piccalily is what my family used to call relish. I don’t know when I switched to relish. LOL! My Mother used fabric or oil cloth with string for stuff that did not need a Ball Jar.
That’s interesting Diana. I can imagine how vintage and lovely those jars would have looked with fabric or oil cloth and tied with string.
