Here are two charming small vintage botanical book pages featuring beautifully detailed illustrations of Senebiera (Wart Cress) and Solidago Virgaurea (Golden-rod). These black and white engravings are from Flowers of the Field by Rev. C. A. Johns, a beloved Victorian-era field guide that was widely used in the 19th century to identify common British wildflowers. The edition I scanned these pages from was published in 1890.

The illustrations are not only scientifically informative but also artistically appealing, with fine linework and elegant botanical labeling. The accompanying text offers a fascinating glimpse into the language and botanical knowledge of the time. For example, the entry on Senebiera coronopus, also known as Lesser Wart Cress, describes it as “a common roadside weed,” while Solidago virgaurea, the European Golden-rod, is noted for thriving on mountainous heaths from July to September.

These pages are perfect for junk journaling, botanical-themed projects, or any vintage-inspired craft or design. As with all the vintage images I share, they are in the public domain and free for personal or commercial creative use.
