This vintage magazine clipping features an article on bush Lima beans. The article states that there are three distinct types of Lima beans, the most widely known and cultivated of which is the large white Lima. It goes on to say, “The others are the small white Lima (Sieva) and the potato Lima or Dreer’s improved. All of these have until recently been known as climbers only, their vigorous growth making tall poles an indispensable feature in their cultivation. In field culture, poles add considerably to the expense of the crop, while, in gardens, they are anything but an ornament.” An illustration of Burpee’s Bush Lima Bean is included in the article.
Here is a black and white clip art version of the illustration of the bush Lima beans.
The article refers to Fig. 2, which shows pods and beans reduced to one-half of their natural sizes.

I scanned the original article from the December 1889 issue of the American Agriculturist magazine.

You’re welcome Ana. I’m happy to know you like it. ?
I love eating beans too, especially good old-fashioned homemade boston baked beans or pinto beans with smoked ham hocks.
Kathy
Yum! My family was from Arkansas and Alabama so I know the pinto beans and ham hocks! Love them cooked that way, with cornbread.
Thanks, Julie!

That’s cool, Kathy! I agree, with cornbread. ?

I’m always curious what traditions the U.S. shares with Canadians. How can a foreign country be so close? Lol!
