Antique Dance Invitation

Here is an antique invitation to the “Second Cotillon at Sherry’s on Monday evening, January twenty-eighth, from nine until one o’clock.” I learned from an online search that a cotillon is a lively French country dance that originated in France in the 18th century.

Here is a black and white version of the invitation.

I scanned the original invitation from the January 1896 issue of The Delineator magazine.

  1. I can’t wait to use this in one of my”junk journals”……Do you have any idea how these invitation worked? I see all the ladies names below but who are they inviting? They are all already “Mrs” so obviously married! If you have any information, I’d love to know! Thanks so much for your fabulous images.

  2. Hi Patricia,

I’m working on a “reply” to your question. You’ll understand what I mean when I post my next blog entry – hopefully this evening (January 4th). 🙂

    Julie
