This vintage clipping provides some brief information about pumpkins and an illustration of a pumpkin placed on its side. Along with other details, the article states that young pumpkins can be used as a vegetable and when ripe they form a valuable esculent for soups and pumpkin pies. My original scan is from Beeton’s New Dictionary of Every-Day Gardening, circa 1899.
