These vintage sewing machine images are from an 1878 agriculture magazine.
If a reader of the magazine would render a little assistance by collecting and forwarding “few or many names of new and old subscribers” to the magazine, that reader became eligible to choose a “Present (free)”! Whether you were a man, woman or child, there were many “Pleasant, Useful and Desirable Articles” to choose from.
In total, there were 100 items to choose from, including these sewing machines but it took a lot more than just a few names to earn either of these beauties. Depending on the subscription level ($1.50 or $1.25), the reader needed to bring between 37 and 94 new subscribers to the magazine to earn one of these machines.
